This paper attempts to investigate the issue of Taiwanese identity manifested in crafts. The main focus of this paper is the discourses of 'vernacularism' and the invention of 'native Taiwaneseness' constructed and imposed by the Japanese during the colonial period, which is followed by my analysis of its transformation and continuity into the postcolonial period. This is discussed from the perspective of colonial representation to postcolonial subjectivity.

As Taiwan's case suggests, ‘vernacularism' is a complex politico-cultural discourse, particularly in the colonial context.   I would like to elucidate its complex nature by problematising its interdependence with Eurocentric historicity and modernity, as well as by pointing out how its transnationality and subversiveness leads to postcolonial subjectivity.
